Making Literary Devices Come Alive!

Carol Baker School Presentation photo

Educator and author Carol Robinson Baker firmly believes that a child’s ability to read is crucial for reaching life goals. Reading to children greatly enhances their journey and is a predictor for high academic achievement.

As a life-long avid reader and an elementary classroom plus ESL teacher and tutor, Carol has discovered that the use of literary devices, particularly figurative language, can be extremely helpful to young readers. They are the tools and techniques that enhance storytelling, convey emotion, and create vivid imagery.

Now with published books and activity books, Carol brings these tools and techniques into the schools. She shares specific classroom activities in creative interactive ways with elementary school children, teachers and daycare workers. Delivery methods include assemblies, library groups, and teacher in-service sessions and re-certification training for daycare workers.

“Carol Robinson Baker provided a wonderful learning experience for our students and staff. Her presentation was highly engaging and kept the attention of even our youngest learners. They absolutely loved all of her animals and couldn’t believe that she was able to come up with a new animal for EACH letter of the alphabet! Our classroom teachers were impressed by how much her writer’s workshop presentation enhanced their alliteration unit that they had just completed as well as the opportunity for students to explore new vocabulary. Her book has so much more to offer than just an ABC book. I would highly recommend for any elementary school to invite Carol to visit.”

The content was relatable and grounded in real classroom experiences, making it easy to connect ideas to daily practice. Mrs. Baker’s energy, approachable style, and engagement activities kept the group actively involved throughout, and the practical strategies shared felt realistic and immediately useful. Overall, it was an enjoyable and meaningful session that left our educators feeling inspired and confident to apply what they learned.”

Enhancing Reading and Writing Skills Through Figurative Language and Authentic Literature

This interactive presentation presents a guide to deepening literacy with creative expression and rich texts for classroom use.

Developing strong reading and writing skills is essential for academic success and lifelong learning. Two powerful tools for advancing literacy are figurative language and authentic literature. By integrating these elements into instruction, educators can foster deeper comprehension, creativity, and engagement among students.

Using a PowerPoint format with valuable resource handouts, Carol leads participants through the different devices that comprise figurative language while providing recognizable examples in well-known children’s books including her best-selling book, Armored Armadillo to Zippy Zebra: An Alliterative Anthology of Animals.

This will also provide opportunity for teachers to construct lessons addressing state objectives for various grades and subjects.

Engaging Children in Early Literacy Activities

This imaginative presentation for day care providers allows participants to gain insights into new ways to engage children in educational activities that tend to be more entertaining and interactive while also addressing many early literacy standards. Drawing from extensive and varied experiences, Carol explains and demonstrates fresh and alternative methods that enthrall even the youngest children.

Through her creative use of finger puppets, nursery rhymes, folk tales, stuffed animals, storybook theater, and a timely power point, members of the audience will participate to clearly demonstrate the value of engaging young children in age-appropriate forms of literacy.

An added bonus will be an introduction to her best-selling children’s book: Armored Armadillo to Zippy Zebra: An Alliterative Anthology of Animals and the accompanying Coloring and Activity Book.
