Armored Armadillo to Zippy Zebra: An Alliteration Anthology of Animals Book Cover

Author and educator Carol Robinson Baker firmly believes that a child’s ability to read is crucial for reaching life goals. Reading to children greatly enhances their journey and is a predictor for high academic achievement.  As a life-long avid reader, Baker has discovered that the use of literary devices, particularly figurative language, can be extremely helpful in this endeavor.

Literary devices are the tools and techniques that enhance storytelling, convey emotion, and create vivid imagery.  Figurative language is one such device that uses words or phrases to convey meaning beyond their usual or literal understanding to create an effect, generate humor, or exaggerate a point.  Common examples of figurative language are alliteration, simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, and anthropomorphism (giving human traits to animals).

Through her A-Z Animal Adventure Series, Baker explores several forms of figurative language using  animals to entertain and educate with these techniques.  The Educational Applications found in each book and on the website are available for the classroom, home, home school, and library environments.
